International Baptist Convention (IBC)
from Dr. Jimmy Martin

The International Baptist Convention held its annual Summer Assembly in Interlaken, Switzerland, July 7-12. The week’s theme, “Let the Nations Rejoice,” was based on Psalm 67. Verse 4 states: “May the nations be glad and sing for joy.”

Worship was led by Scottish singer/song-writer, Ian White. The music for worship was a blend of new and ancient. Ian has put a number of Psalms to music, and conference attendees enjoyed
learning new songs, as well as singing familiar hymns and choruses of the faith.

Bob Marsh, IBC friend and mentor, led in Bible studies from Acts each morning. His encouraging and challenging messages stressed the coming of the Holy Spirit who empowered the church to preach the Gospel to the nations. New Testament Gospel preaching was anchored in the Old
Testament and centered on the person of Christ.

Evening worship was led by RE: Creations, the husband-and-wife drama team of Charles Reece and Rebecca McCoy-Reece, who serve as artists-in-residence at Bluefield College in Bluefield, Virginia. The drama sketches were a change from the normal worship of years past, but were received well by those attending.

Seminars in the areas of Church Leadership and Ministries, Children/Youth/Family, Personal Development, and topics such as reaching Muslims for Christ and “Ask the Doctor” were led by an
international team of speakers.

An outstanding team of trained, experienced, and dedicated teachers from the Kentucky Baptist Convention led the children’s program. This year marked the final year for the Kentucky team to provide the children’s ministries, which will be led next year by volunteers from the Baptist General Association of Virginia.

EuroVenture, the IBC Summer Youth camp, was held in Grindelwald, Switzerland, and was led by the Youth Ministry Team. A team from Hannibal-LaGrange College in Missouri assisted again. Tom Hufty, V-P at H-LG, and Roger Glidewell, youth communicator and professor, were the main speakers at EuroVenture.

Judith Lynn Maxwell and the Summer Assembly Ministry Team did a great job of planning and putting on the conference.

Next year’s conference, July 5-10, 2008, will include a celebration of the IBC’s 50 years of ministry and witness. Brian Kirby, the 2008 chairman, announced the theme, “Fix Our Eyes on Jesus,” from Hebrews 12:2. The 2008 conference will be a time to celebrate our convention’s past, consider our churches today, and contemplate our calling for the future.

Canadian pastor and author, Richard Blackaby, will lead us to understand the “cloud of witnesses” who have gone before us and deepen our understanding of God’s goodness and faithfulness.
Award winning Christian singer, composer and worship leader, Babbie Mason, along with the Emmanuel Gospel Choir (Paris) will lead worship.

We also expect a “cloud of witnesses” of former convention members and friends from the ABCE/EBC/IBC including Herbert Stout, Elizabeth Merritt and others who played a great role in our convention’s past to join us. Everyone is invited. Details may be found on the IBC website, www.ibc-churches.org.
